The goal of coaching is good management: to make the most of an organization’s valuable resources.” Harvard Business Review
If there was anything that came out of 2020 it was that leadership and management were put under the spotlight. After a very long time, people leaders were required to demonstrate their courage, care, commitment and changeability in a very short period of time.
The way staff were treated could have been better for many and was done well by others. It was the ability of the leader to look at their organisation and their people to react in a way which was thought through, planned, for the right reasons and delivered effectively.
Whether leaders had to make harsh decisions which would affect the jobs of staff to taking the stance to hold on to their people, there was an impact.
In the last few months of 2020, I was asked to speak to a number of organisations on the topic of Why the virtual world needs a coaching mindset?
Based on studies, views from experts and simple experience, there is a need for the essence of management and leadership to shift and build upon its current foundation. I believe the coaching mindset is the answer.
A coaching mindset requires managers and leaders to act in new and different ways:
- to take their staff on a journey
- to get them to feel they are being listened to
- to show empathy and
- to create a setting where they can be vulnerable and still feel safe.
Staff are feeling a sense of loss, a term known as anticipatory grief, they are not sure what will happen next nor do they know when they will see their workmates again. That fear creates stress, worry and impacts all elements of life.
As a leader and manager, knowing that staff are going through a hard time means searching for the right ways to support them is key.
The manager becomes more than a taskmaster, they become a mentor, a supporter and a role model. The new types of behaviours and styles of management become key and these include:
- Compassionate Leadership
- Mentoring
- Sharing a bit about yourself to show your vulnerabilities
- Being authentic and caring
Coaching is an all-encompassing style of management and provides a set of skills which allows managers, leaders and staff to look at how they behave, deal with situations, react and better handle situations.
Coaching can be used in all elements within a workplace, from how we handle ourselves, give feedback, manage conflicts to running virtual teams.
As a result of the events of 2020, we were inspired to create an online program called “Coaching Skills for Business”. This self-paced program provides individuals with the insights, learnings and real-life application of methods which can be used right away. The program has been accredited by the CPD and offers 16 hours CPD hours which will be certified upon completion.
The program takes our coaching expertise as ICF accredited coaches and combines that with over 50 years of corporate experience to provide a mountain of knowledge and tools which will help individuals all over the world.
“In the end, people will look up to their leaders and managers and assess whether their behaviours and actions are aligned to their needs. We all deserve to be our best selves for who we are and in the way we treat those around us.” Philippe Mathijs
